Help to disable cookies in popular browsers.
Stopping Cookies In Netscape In the netscape directory there should be
a file called cookies.txt or magiccookie on the mac, search for this file
if you cannot find it. This file is where all the all the cookie entries are
found, you can delete the contents of this file regardless of the warning
at the top of the page. After the contents have been deleted save the file
and set its attributes to read-only, hidden and system. This will stop cookies
from being set persistently on your hard disk, but it will not stop cookies
from being set in memory while netscape is running, but when you exit netscape
these cookies will be cleared. This is probably a good alternative to have
netscape alert you when a site wants to set a cookie, this becomes more of
an annoyance than a prevention.
Stopping Cookies In IE + Stopping Cookies In Internet Explorer Internet Explorerno-longer
stores cookies in a single file, but each cookie as a separate file in the
windows\cookies directory, this makes it harder stop cookies, but if you want
to stop individual cookies, like the doubleclick cookies, you can corrupt
the cookie by deleting the contents then saving the file and setting its attributes
read-only, hidden and system, this means when you log onto a site which has
set that cookie it cannot read any information off your cookie or give you
a new one. Like in netscape you can set IE to alert you before accepting cookie,
to do this go to the View menu | options | advanced tag and click on "warn
before accepting cookies"

Junk Busters - The
Internet Junkbuster Proxy TM is free privacy-enhancing software that can be
run on your PC or by your ISP or company. It blocks requests for URLs (typically
banner ads) that match its blockfile. It also deletes unauthorized cookies and
other unwanted identifying header information that is exchanged between web
servers and browsers. These headers are not normally accessible to users (even
though they may contain information that's important to your privacy), but with
the Internet Junkbuster you can see almost anything you want and control everything
you're likely to need.
The Internet Junkbusters thwart identification by identd. If your computer (or
your ISP's) is running the identd
demon, servers can ask it for the identity of the user making the request
at time you request a page from them. But if you're going through a proxy, they
will identify the user name associated with the proxy, not you. A visit to http://ident.junkbusters.com
lets you see what's happening. This test is (quite rightly) blocked by many
firewalls;
just interrupt the transfer if you get an abnormal wait after clicking. Running
other applications may also expose you via identd; the proxy of course doesn't
help then.
JunkBusters Privacy Issues-You
can be tracked from your mouse clicks. Your browser assembles each page by making
``HTTP requests'' for its text and graphics parts from one or more web sites.
These sites may not have been named in the link you clicked on: two banner ads
on the same page can come from different companies. Your browser gives all of
them a lot of information you might prefer to keep private. Most sites store
these details indefinitely. How they know where you came from The ``HTTP Referer''
tells them what led you to the request. If you use a search engine to find a
site, the entire query you typed is typically handed to the sites you then click
on. If you clicked on a banner advertisement, the URL may contain coded data
used to target specific ads at you. (Before clicking on an ad, look at the URL
displayed for it. Codes and long addresses suggest that your mouse clicks are
being tracked.) If the URL you clicked on was in one of your private files,
such as your email reader may use, the full file name is still handed over to
the web site. It may contain information about you such as an indication of
your name or email address, the email program you are using, and the structure
of your file space. And so much more .....
This site is very technical and you can gain a tremendous insight into the workings
of visiting websites and reading your mail. How easily you can be identified
and tracked.
